Ground was officially broken Monday on an affordable-housing apartment complex in Long Beach’s Cambodia Town neighborhood.

According to TCC Family Health and Bridge Housing, the development at 1500 E. Anaheim St. will feature a community health and wellness center on the ground floor and 88 affordable apartments above.

The project will also include a parking structure for clinic staff, clients and residents.

“We are so thankful to be partnering with Bridge Housing to bring not only health, wellness and healing programs to this vibrant community, but also much needed quality, affordable and supportive housing,” TCC Family Health CEO Dr. Elisa Nicholas said in a statement.

TCC will create jobs and offer health care including women’s health and OB services, dental health services, acupuncture, behavioral health services and a pharmacy to the community, officials said. The wellness center will include meeting spaces, a teaching kitchen and a courtyard. TCC will also partner with Pacific Asian Counseling Services, Khmer Girls in Action and other community-based organizations in the neighborhood.

The one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments will be affordable for families earning 30-60% of the area’s median income, according to the developers, while 20 units will be reserved for formerly homeless seniors.

Mental Health American Los Angeles and YMCA of Greater Long Beach will provide resident services.

“Building and maintaining quality, affordable housing options in Long Beach continues to be of top priority,” Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia said in a statement. “The Anaheim & Walnut development will provide 88 affordable units and is another great project that will provide modern, sustainable housing and services to enhance the quality of life of residents and older adults who need it most.”

The project is being built by R.D. Olson Construction, which is also the contractor on another in-progress affordable housing community known as West Carson Villas at 22801 S. Vermont Ave, Carson, in partnership with PATH Ventures and the Los Angeles County Development Authority.

That development will be a 111-unit, four-story complex.
